Google my Business: 9 Actionable Tips for Better Rankings

GOOGLE MY BUSINESS is by far the strongest factor for your business to rank in the Google Local Pack.

And since the Local pack results are displayed right at the top of Google search results, you'd better have a well optimised Google my business profile if you want your business to be displayed in the local pack.

But you may not have noticed that Google has introduced many new features to Google My business over the past few months to help small businesses drive more customers to their business.

If you're not using these features, not only you are missing out on the chance of getting more clients but also reducing your chances of featuring in the Local pack.

That's why in this video I am going to run through 9 very powerful features that have been added to the Google my business suite which you can use to better promote your business online for free.

Starting with Google my business posts, you'll find out how you can add small posts to your listing that act like mini adverts to promote your product or services.

You will then discover the power of the question and answer option available by default in every google listing.

You will learn how to add a description to your business, an option that was dropped by Google in 2016 which has been reintroduced in March 2018. (PLEASE NOTE: the description field can contain up to 750 characters and not 750 words as specified in the video)

I will also cover Google reviews which no longer requires any introduction and teach you how to add a service menu regardless of what type of business you're in.

I will show you how to add a video to your listing as well as a booking button and direct message your potential customers.

I will round it all up with the Google website builder option so even if you don't have a website you can build one.

And to finish it all off, there is a bonus chapter that will show you how to track accurately the organic traffic generated from your Google My business profile using the campaign URL builder:

    Great video. I have one question. I am putting my business on google and in my country the official language is Serbian so do you think that it is better to write down my services in serbian or to just add the existing ones in english on the services page, or both? Thank you!

      If you are a local business onwer and you are based in serbia I would assume serbian is probably the best choice

    That is a powerful set of tools. A little bit outdated, but it is me, who took care of the topic very late 🙂 I assume that mastering the algorithm of some settings and then analytics will be my short-term goal. And some one-time settings, like mobile notifications etc. or creating Welcome messages – no effort that I put into that will be wasted. Thank you for a ride between apps, pages and interfaces. Trying to remember everything after listening to you only one time – that would be not wise or responsible – so I did screenshots and wrote comments like crazy 🙂 BTW. In my country still not many companies use those features, so it is like an occasion to take advantage of the time-travel that you gave me with this fast given and easy to acquire tutorial. So many fancy words or pictures, but I am happy, that no coding is needed (copy-paste is not coding, right?) 🙂

    Great job and thank you very much for this useful info, but I have some questions:

    1. About Questions & answers: How can I ask own questions and answer them by myself?

    2. About Services and Appintment URL: Do I understand correctly that the Services area and Appointment URL is not available for every primary category?

    Can I get these options if I add more secondary categories?

    Are there alternatives?

    3. About Photos and Videos: Do I have to give the photos and videos a relevant filename before uploading to get a better ranking?

      You can add your own questions and answer them too. You’re familiar with what your customers frequently asks you so use that space and go to town.

      No. Links are related to your primary category
      Question 3
      No but i am sure it won’t harm if you do. This used to be an SEO signal but no longer bears weight

    Great video, would replacing the url with the tracking url change the visible(to the customers) url? or will it get rid everything after the .com/?

      Customers will not see the URL tracking code unless they over over the website button in the GMB panel and look at the bottom left of their screen . In google maps it doesn’t show at all.

      You simply can’t change where the posts appear. Google controls the position.

    Excellent video, thank you. I wish Google had features that allowed edits to apply simultaneously to multiple business locations. I manage 8 locations… adding our Services and Descriptions was a huge hassle.

    Excellent vidoes. They are very helpful. Does it help to replace the generic “cityscape” bule and white banner photo on the GMB listing with something that describes my business – may be a name and a slogan in bold letters, like a banner on the physical store? Purely for cosmetic reasons – so visitors will know know right away what the business is all about. I don’t expect this to influence SEO in any way, by the way, but I think it will help the visitors.
